A few blocks from downtown Iowa City seems like an unlikely place for one of the top Salsa retailers in the Midwest, but it’s the home to longtime retailer World of Bikes. For over forty-five years, World of Bikes has provided bicycle sales and service to the greater Johnson County community. Along with Salsa, they sell Trek and other brands from Quality Bicycle Products.
Ryan Baker, the owner, is an avid cyclist who understands the relationship between retailers and advocacy. He goes above and beyond a membership with many advocacy organizations in the area and World of Bikes is one of the Coalition’s top tier retailers. You’ll find Ryan or one of his employees at nearly every meeting where cycling facilities are involved.
What is the dream for cycling from the crew at World of Bikes?
Ryan says, “More facilities and connectivity providing more people more places to ride; protection and rights for cyclists on the road; more kids on bikes, and personally, more places to mountain bike!”
World of Bikes is skilled at developing a community of cyclists in the area, as they host regular rides on a variety of surfaces, many with a no-drop format. Evening workshops and events are a common occurrence in their space and they’ve taken a deep dive into bike packing education. Employees at World of Bikes are encouraged to live the cycling lifestyle and earn commuter credits by riding their bikes to work!
Odds are you’ve encountered World of Bikes at local events, as they provide bike valet parking and participate in school bike rodeos.
Ryan’s enthusiasm for cycling was evident when we asked him about the best thing about being in the bicycle business.
His response was, “We get to sell fun!! Bikes are fun and riding them is even MORE fun. We get to help people from all walks of life pick out the perfect bike for their needs.”
World of Bikes has been a long-time Coalition supporter, one of the early adopters and one of our sponsors of the 2019 Retailer Challenge Match. Ryan and World of Bikes support the Iowa Bicycle Coalition because:
“We believe that the cycling community needs a voice in government to help develop facilities and safety rights for cyclists. We also see the benefits that the Iowa Bicycle Coalition brings to education and promotion in the cycling community.”
A great big thank you to Ryan and the crew at World of Bikes for supporting the work of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. Advocacy doesn’t happen in a vacuum, it happens when cyclists and the bike industry work together for safe, enjoyable, and accessible bicycling for all.
