Before heading out on RAGBRAI, you should make sure that you have all the proper gear to make your trip a successful one. If it’s your first time there may be things you would never have thought about until you experience it; and even if you are an experienced RAGBRAI rider, you can also improve what you bring along to improve your experience.

Many people that are doing RAGBRAI might have a support vehicle to provide the essentials they need, but aside from that you still need to have the right kind of gear. Choosing items such as a lightweight, durable tent can help your tent hold up in the worst elements mother-nature may bring. There is nothing fun about being in a tent that doesn’t hold up in harsh weather conditions. Another important sleep-related item would be a sleeping bag that is also lightweight and rated for the right temperature range. Don’t forget the sleeping pad to go with your bag! Knowing your sleeping habits can help you pick a bag that will guarantee you get the rest needed for the next long day of riding.

Some smaller items you may need to remember other than your basic riding gear could include: a tent fan, extra tent stakes, tent repair kit, headlamp, small medical kit, bug spray, sun tan lotion, chamois glide & a camp shower/body wipes. Lastly, a few items to put in the support vehicle (if you have one) to make the breaks from riding more enjoyable: comfortable camp chairs, portable chargers (such as Goal Zero) to keep your electronics running, and maybe even some small yard games to pass the time at the campsite.

Hopefully these items are a good reminder for what you can use as a checklist before you head out on your RAGBRAI experience this upcoming year. Travel safe and most importantly, have fun doing it!
