The following information is a summary of the ABC Quick Check presentation. You can view our slideshow and video below and download the files for your own use. In addition, you can download our tip sheet under file attachments. Creative commons license applies with no commercial use, attribution.

Recently an 11-year-old boy was involved in a crash when he failed to stop at a stop sign and rode his bike into another vehicle in the intersection. Bicyclists should check their brakes each and every time they ride to avoid crashes. The Iowa Bicycle Coalition reminds bicyclists to perform an ABC Quick Check each time they ride their bicycle.
A is for Air. You need to make sure there is enough air in the tires. The recommended pressure is stamped on the sidewall of the tire.
B is for Brakes. Your brakes must be able to safely stop your bicycle. If you use hand brakes, squeeze the lever towards the handlebars. If there is not enough room for your thumb between the brake lever and the handlebar when the brake is fully applied, then you need to tighten your brake cable.
C is for Chain. Be sure your pedals are not loose. When the pedals are turned, the chain should turn freely. There should be no lateral play in the pedals.
Quick is for Quick Release. If you bike is equipped with quick release axles, be sure they are tightened.
Check is for everything else. Take a quick ride and make sure there is nothing else wrong with your bike.
Parents should teach their children to perform the ABC Quick Check when they ride. Having a bike in good working order is an important step to preventing injuries. If repairs are needed, many local bike shops have mechanics that can make needed repairs.
Your local bike store and bike club can serve as an important resource. Many organizations hold bike safety classes and bike rodeos that can teach important safety skills.
