Governor Declares May Bike Iowa Month

On April 21, Governor Chet Culver declared May to be Bike Iowa Month.  The declaration is the 3rd annual bike month declaration signed by Iowa Governors.

The declaration calls for increased awareness of bicycling and follows with the national recognition of Bike Month by the League of American Bicyclists.

The declaration highlights Iowa's trail resources include 1620 miles of trail with the intersection of the Mississippi River Trail and the American Discovery Trail.  It recognizes the longest, oldest, and largest statewide bike touring event.   In addition, the declaration recognizes bicycling as a year-round activity that can lead Iowa to energy independence.

The action of the declaration asks Iowans to participate in an event, create and event, teach a child to ride a bicycle, or just go out and ride.

In a special recognition ceremonly on May 3, 2010, Governor Culver recognized Bike Month and held a ceremony for the signing of the bike safety provisions in the standing appropriations bill.  Mark Wyatt from the Iowa Bicycle Coalition was on hand to speak with Governor Culver and Senator Reilly (D-Oskaloosa)  about bike safety.
