Shawn Johnson to Participate in LIVESTRONG Event

The Greater Des Moines Area Livestrong Chapter, along with the Mercy Cancer Center and YMCA Healthy Living Center, are thrilled to announce that US Olympic Gold Medal Champion Shawn Johnson will be participating in:

LIVESTRONG DAY AT JORDAN CREEK TOWN CENTER

SATURDAY, JANUARY 9TH, 2010
WEST DES MOINES, IOWA

Shawn will be inducted as a member of the Livestrong Army and will be riding her new Trek Madone Bike with 100 plus other riders inside Jordan Creek Town Center.

This event will feature drawings, store discount coupons, and appearance by members of the Des Moines Bucaneers Hockey Team, and most importantly information and conversations that could save your life or that of a loved one.

Staff from Livestrong and the Mercy

Cancer Center will be there for advice

and screening information.

BACKGROUND

Shawn won her first Senior National Championships in August, 2007, followed by World AA Champion, with the largest point differentiation against some of the best gymnasts in the world in both competitions. In June 2008, Shawn reclaimed her title as she became the 2008 National Champion and was named to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Team.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, Shawn earned an individual gold medal in the balance beam and three silver medals in the individual all-around, floor exercise and team categories.

In April 2009, Shawn was named the 79th Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Sullivan Award recipient, one of the most prestigious honors in amateur sports. Shawn became the youngest ever contestant on ABC’s "Dancing with the Stars," where she danced her way to becoming the Champion of season eight.

Shawn is involved in a number of philanthropic activities such as working with animal, and children’s and cancer charities. Shawn is also involved in programs that help build good character amongst youth.
