Lights at Night

Add some light to your riding.

October is the scariest month for bicyclists and drivers. The sun sets earlier and rises later leaving bicyclists in the dark for trips to work and school. Leave the fright to ghosts and goblins and implement some travel safety tips.

According to Dave Glowacz, author of Urban Bikers' Tricks and Tips, bicycle trips at night account for 3% of bicycle travel, yet produce over half the fatalities in bicycle crashes.

New equipment, such as LED lights have made bicycle riding at night more affordable as well as safe. Cyclists should choose a bright enough light to see road hazards and be seen by oncoming vehicles.

Tips for Drivers

  • Slow down and allow more time to get to your destination.
  • Use your headlights in any low-light situation.
  • Keep your windshield clean.
  • Expect to see bicyclists on the road and intersections with trails.

Tips for Bicyclists

  • Iowa Code 321.397 requires a front white light and a rear red light or a red reflector.
  • In addition to lights, use reflective tape on your bike, equipment or clothing.
  • Wear bright colors to attract attention to your presence.
  • Assume motorists cannot see you and be prepared to react.
