-- Class is nationally accredited through the League of American Bicyclists -- DES MOINES, Iowa (September 26, 2007) – Eleven students, six local and five from other areas of the Midwest) attended a League of American Bicyclists (LAB) Cycling Instructor Seminar over the weekend. During the class, students learned a whole range of new teaching skills for general bike education for adults and children, as well as commuting education and safety. “This represents an excellent growth for cycling for the Iowa, “ explained John Rider, League Cycling Instructor Trainer for the Midwest. Rider, formerly from Des Moines and now from Madison, WI, took the class through a rigorous training module that tested individual biking skills and prepared students for becoming instructors for BikeEd Road 1 and Road II, Commuting, Kids I and Kids II courses. “In communities where this kind of training is offered, we see an increase of bicycle awareness and safety,” said Mark Wyatt, director of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. “ It assists in overall knowledge and confidence for adults wanting to use their bikes as a transportation option to and from work and around the community.” People interested in arranging classes should contact the Iowa Bicycle Coalition for a referral to an instructor or visit www.iowabicyclecoalition.org and click on Safety. Lists of future classes and safety tips are included on the site. Photo Credit: Mark Wyatt Zac Bitting of Des Moines performs a safety drill as part of the League Cycling Instructor Seminar. xx
