Iowa Bicycle Coalition launches Safe Routes to School Curriculum

Teachers or communities hoping to implement more bicycling and walking education into the classroom, the before and after school program, or recreation programs have a new resource.  Iowa Kids on the Move is a new curriculum for Iowa schools.  The curriculum based upon Portland and Fort Collins make walking and bicycling part of the school day.  Get a copy at http://www.iowasaferoutes.org and click resources.

Marshalltown Studies Bicycle Parking

On August 19, Marshalltown's Iowa Valley Bicycle Club and 7/11 Committee held a bicycle parking study for the Central Business District.  The Iowa Bicycle Coalition facilitated the event.  The discussion centered around placing more bicycle parking in the downtown area of Marshalltown to help encourage more shopping trips by bicycle.  Stay tuned for the study results.

IBC Launches Tips for Cyclists with YouTube Videos

The Iowa Bicycle Coalition is trying to expand their website to create a resource for the newer cyclist.   We even have resources for communities, such as this Installing Bike Parking video.  Get some articles from contributor BJ Smith and the Bicycle Tutor or maybe even our own videos.  We want people to ride their bike more often.

Iowa Bicycle Coalition in Iowa Outdoors

IBC is in the newest Iowa Outdoors, September/October 2008 edition.  Iowa Outdoors is the Iowa DNR's very well done and enjoyable magazine of conservation and recreation.  The article is entitled Top Rides for Autumn Spender and features six Iowa rides.  The rides are part of the guidebook Biking Iowa by Bob Morgan.

Anyone that has ridden across Iowa can tell you Iowa has a very diverse and intriguing landscape.  Combining conservation interests, state parks, forests and preserves just makes a ride even more enjoyable.  We hope the late summer and fall offers you a chance to get out and see Iowa in a way that just can't be experienced inside a car.

Biking Iowa available for purchase

You can also purchase your very own copy of Biking Iowa written by Bob Morgan of Cedar Falls and read about 50 great road trips and trails rides around Iowa.  http://www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/gear.htm

Schools are open.  Keep an eye out for kids.

As summer winds down, Iowa schools are heading back into full swing.  Kids will be on their bikes or walking to and from school in the early mornings and afternoons.  As drivers we need to be on alert when traffic increases during this time to ensure safety.  Children should feel free to walk and bike to school, because it helps them build many different important life qualities  such as independence, responsibility, and leadership.  Walking and biking children are also getting more exercise helping them to stay healthier and happier.

School zones can also become a very congested area during drop off and pick up times.  Encouraging your child to walk or bike to and from school can increase traffic safety around the school zone by decreasing car congestion.  Less car traffic also means less harmful car exhaust emissions making our environment a little more healthier.

Walking and biking to school can be a healthy and fun experience not just for the children but for all of us as long as we are willing to do our part.  Please be aware of the children and of the environment.  If you or someone you know would be interested in starting a supervised walking and/or biking program to and from your school for your children and need a little help getting started please contact Molly Gable, Safe Routes To School Program Director (515-309-2867, molly@iowabicyclecoalition.org).

I Bike & I Vote T-shirt Fun Photos

http://www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/gear.htm

What happens when you buy a cool I Bike & I Vote T-shirt and you mix in a little creativity?  We don't know yet, but we hope you'll help us find out.  We are looking for photos of people with the IBC I Bike & I Vote T-shirt on in fun locations or with fun people.  Janelle had her photo taken at the Hawaii State Capitol earlier this year.  First person to get their photo taken in this T-shirt with Senator's Obama or McCain, Governor Culver, Senator's Grassley or Harkin, or Representative's Braley, Loebsack, Boswell, Latham, or King wins a free Share the Road sticker.

Let's spread the word that bicyclists are citizens, that we have rights, that we pay taxes, and that we vote.  While we're at it let's have some fun.  Please email us your T-shirt photos to bikeinfo@iowabicyclecoalition.org

IBC Available for Bike Club Speaking Opportunities

If your bike club is working on it's fall and winter schedule and looking for a speaker, we might be able to help you.  We have a number of presentations already available from bike friendly communities, to safe routes, to bicycling safety.  With a little notice we could develop a presentation about a number of topics.  Contact bikeinfo@iowabicyclecoalition.org
